This Mladen Stilinovic retrospective reveals the art of one of the most significant representatives of the neo-avant-garde art of former Yugoslavia and Central Europe. The show, of unique scope in the region, presents his most important installations, collages, photographs, artist’s books and groups of artworks.

Throughout his diversified work, Stilinovic (1947, Zagreb) explores ideological signs and their social aspects. His impact is apparent in the way of thinking of a generation of his artist contemporaries. As a member of the Six Artists’ Group he attempts to answer - using the most varied of mediums - questions about whether symbols, colours and slogans can ever be divorced from their political and artistic context, or to what extent they can be transplanted. His works criticise the language of politics, the institutional hierarchy within art, and the role of money and labour in society using the devices of irony, paradox and manipulation.
