József Egry (1883-1951) was one of the most defining figures in modern Hungarian painting. He came to the attention of the general public as “the painter of Lake Balaton”, although his oeuvre is extremely wide both technically and as regards his subjects; in fact, they bear within them many of the hallmarks of spiritual renewal evident in the early years of the previous century.

The central figures of his early works are the people of the street: pedestrians, porters, sailors, servant girls, bohemians. It was only from the early 1920s that the Balaton began to take centre stage in his artistry, and not by chance since this tight-lipped, reserved painter lived almost his entire life by the lake shore. He managed to create a light, relaxed atmosphere in his works, which hovers on the borders between oil pastels, graphics and oil paintings. This comprehensive display presents outstanding works from József Egry’s entire oeuvre, from the early years to the very end of his creative life.
